No more “dog catchers” | Message from Sumner’s Mayor

It's unfortunate how dog catchers are portrayed in old cartoons. You know the image--the mean guy with the big net who just can't wait to capture the poor, lost mutt. It couldn't be farther from the truth.

The following is a message from Sumner’s mayor Dave Enslow:

Sumner is really lucky to have professional, compassionate animal control officers who can’t wait to find a wonderful home and Forever Family for all lost dogs, cats and animals in our city.  They have used licenses and microchips to reconnect dogs who went missing from their worried family months before and miles away.  They have gone into bad situations (at some risk to their own safety) to rescue animals in distress.  They work to match animals needing homes with just the right new owner so that both will be happy for a long, long time.

Sumner operates Metro Animal Services in partnership with Puyallup.  We provide the staffing and oversight, and they provide a space for the shelter.  Five other cities have come onboard because they recognize we can provide higher quality of service for less cost.

How can you help?  License your own pets.  For about $10 each year, you are helping to support other pets and owners when they are in great distress.  You never know if you’re going to need that service yourself, but even if you don’t it’s a simple way to help other pets and families in your community.  When you need another pet in your own family, visit the Metro Animal Services shelter.  You can even browse the pets available online.  Most of all, thank the officers when you see them around town or at the latest event or parade.  They do great work for all of us.
