One week left to sign up for Students on Council program

Local 7th and 8th grade age students can get a chance to participate in local government

There’s still a few days left for local students to apply to join the Enumclaw City Council as student ambassadors for a quarter.

The “Students on Council” program started in 2016 as a way to let 7th and 8th grade students in the Enumclaw School District learn the inner workings of local government by attending committee and city council meetings.

Participating students attend one council meeting each month for a three-month period, during which they’ll provide a report to the council on what’s going on at their school or with their educational progress. The student may also select a council committee meeting to attend each month.

The goal is to encourage young people to take interest in public service and get some experience with governmental operations along the way, according to the city.

Interested students must submit an application by the end of Friday, December 17. The selected students will be notified by January 7, 2022.

The city currently plans to have the students attend virtually via Microsoft Teams.

Interested students, or those with questions, can reach out to the city by contacting Maureen Burwell at mburwell@ci.enumclaw.wa.us, Jessica Rose jrose@ci.enumclaw.wa.us or Mayor Jan Molinaro at jmolinaro@ci.enumclaw.wa.us, according to the city.

Applications should include the following:

• The student’s teacher and the school (or homeschool) they attend.

• The students’ preference for serving during either the January through March 2022 quarter, or the April through June 2022 quarter.

• The student’s contact information, as well as their parents’ or guardians’.

• Any special accommodations needed.
