Panthers take fourth at All-SPSL

Although the title belts didn't come easy at an All-League Tournament that is among the toughest in the state, Bonney Lake did secure three championships as it took home fourth place laurels.

Bonney Lake’s varsity wrestling squad took fourth overall with 176.5 points to close out 2011 at the year-ending, 32-team All-South Puget Sound League Wrestling Tournament held in Auburn High School’s gym on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 29-30. In this intense grapple-fest that included some of the finest wrestlers in the state, the black and teal managed to secure three championship belts out of the fray as 182-pounder Evan Dorsey, super soph 113 pounder Colton Tracy and senior team captain Andrew Cunningham at 120 brought home golds with a trio of victories in their title bouts.

Cunningham, who sailed through his bracket en route to reaching the hour of champions, then wrestled wisely and defensively beating out his old nemesis, Enumclaw’s Tyke Reid 4-0 in the showdown under the lights.

At 113-pounds, sophomore whirling dervish Colton Tracy solidified his top spot by laying a smack down 7-2 decision on his 4A Todd Beamer foe to easily claim the featherweight accolades.

For upperclassman Dorsey, the black and teals 182-pounder, it was total grace under pressure as he battled his way to the spotlight and prevailed with a nail biting 4-3 triumph to sew up top honors at that weight.

Meanwhile, senior cruiser bruiser Jake Lueders and sophomore dynamo Chili Sabin took home third and fourth place accolades at 170 and 160 pounds respectively. Wrestling in a 145-pound weight class, jam- packed with experienced talent, Matt Yuste, BLHS’s promising sophomore mat man took eighth place in that tough bracket and 50 pounds later Jordan Schultz, who appears to be a man on a mission this year at 195-pounds, also finished in the running with an eighth place after being pinned by highly skilled Jesus Rivera from Class 4A Bethel.

Bonney Lake gets back into the SPSL 3A swing of things when it travels to Decatur High’s facility Thursday, Jan. 5 at 7 p.m. to wrestle a fierce Gator crew which like the Panthers are highly ranked and the two contingents will be battling for league pride as well.
