The city of Enumclaw is inviting family and friends to attend the formal dedication of Bruce Guenther Park.

The event is planned for 3 p.m. April 13 at the park on Battersby Avenue.

The small parcel of grass and trees - with two picnic tables, a handful of benches and a scattering of rhododendrons - was informally known as Industrial Skills Park, reflecting its nearest neighbor. That name was abandoned when the Industrial Skills operation closed in 2003.

In looking to give a permanent name to the park, the city has seen fit to honor a career lawman who spent 18 years at the helm of the Enumclaw Police Department. Guenther joined the city force in 1965 and was promoted to chief in 1971, a position he held until his 1989 retirement. He died Oct. 29, 2003.
