Pierce councilman leaps into 31st race

Republican Pierce County Councilmember Shawn Bunney has announced his candidacy for the Position 1 seat in the state House of Representatives, representing the 31st Legislative District.

Republican Pierce County Councilmember Shawn Bunney has announced his candidacy for the Position 1 seat in the state House of Representatives, representing the 31st Legislative District.

Because of term limits, Bunney cannot seek re-election to his post on the Pierce County Council.

The Position 1 seat is now filled by Republican Dan Roach who, in turn, is running for Bunney’s seat on the County Council.

Bunney is endorsed as a candidate for the Legislature by Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna, Congressman Dave Reichert, Pierce County Council Chair Roger Bush, Auburn Mayor Pete Lewis, Sumner Mayor Dave Enslow, Bonney Lake Mayor Neil Johnson, Edgewood Mayor Jeff Hogan and Enumclaw Councilmember Mike Ennis.

In a press release announcing his candidacy, Bunney stated his commitment to encouraging business.

“I have worked for years to cut the red tape holding businesses back in Pierce County. I am going to use that experience to cut the red tape in Washington state so businesses can grow and thrive,” he said. “The best way to get our economy back on track is by helping private businesses succeed and create new jobs, not through government handouts.”

He plans to channel his efforts into strengthening the local economy.

“We need leaders with common sense and fiscal discipline,” he said. “I’ll use my experience to help get our economy back on track.”
