The Pierce County River Revitalization Task Force continued its three-session policy summit July 22 in Orting.
At the meeting held at High Cedars Golf Club, the group identified topics from their previous meeting, which are under city and county jurisdiction and therefore more likely to be solved.
“I think it’s a great conversation on a lot of topics which have been brought forward,” task force Vice Chair Shawn Bunney said.
One of the most controversial of these is the concept of dredging, which residents and council members continue to push for, but meet resistance in the form of environmental regulations, preventing the removal of debris from the river.
“Some of the conversations about the personal impact of people has been interesting,” Bunney said.
Task force members Pat Tea and Ann Coon addressed the challenge facing residents with homes in flood zones.
Homeowners in such areas struggle with being unable to sell their homes because of the likelihood of another flood and sometimes do not receive money from their insurance if they’ve collected from being flooded before.
The group continues to attempt to solve this and other matters at the next policy meeting at 5:30 p.m Aug. 12 in Sumner, with the location to be announced soon.
