Pierce County to celebrate Spiketon Bridge opening

An organized walk and two bike rides will take you to the Sept. 13 party.

Fans of the Foothills Trail, rejoice — the Spiketon Ditch Bridge will be officially open this Saturday.

Pierce County Parks and the Foothills Rails-to-Trails Coalition will be hosting a celebration on Sept. 13, from 11 a.m. to noon, at the bridge.

The bridge’s opening now allows runners, hikers, and bikers to get from Enumclaw to Puyallup — 24 miles total.

Speaking of recreation, there is no parking near where the party will be held, and attendees will have to utilize the trail if they want to listen to remarks from Pierce County Executive Ryan Mello, Pierce County District Council member Dave Morell, Foothills Rails-to-Trails Coalition Executive Director Breanna Fokes, and other community partners, plus to enjoy light refreshments.

If you want to walk with a group, there will be a bike ride with the Foothills Rails-to-Trails Coalition, starting at 10:30 a.m. at the Doc Tait Pavilion. Parking is available at and near the trailhead.

The distance is four miles.

It’s encouraged to wear a bowtie to honor the trail look near Spiketon.

From South Prairie, there will be an organized walk, also starting at 10:30 a.m.

This is a 1.5 mile trek. There is limited parking at this trailhead.

Finally, if you’re coming all the way from Puyallup, the Tacoma Washington Bicycle Club will be piking from the East Puyallup Trailhead — 17 miles one-way, and the club plans to do a 55-mile out and back ride, if you think you’re up to it.

Details of the ride can be found here.
