READY! for Kindergarten classes begin soon

Often parents wonder what a typical 5-year-old knows, or should know, the first day of school. The school district calls the readiness skills Kindergarten Targets. They are not requirements, but learning goals, and district representatives say children who are taught these skills at home get get a head start that lasts year to year.

Sumner School District offers READY! for Kindergarten, an educational program for parents.

Often parents wonder what a typical 5-year-old knows, or should know, the first day of school. The school district calls the readiness skills Kindergarten Targets. They are not requirements, but learning goals, and district representatives say children who are taught these skills at home get get a head start that lasts year to year.

The goal of the READY! for Kindergarten program is to provide information to parents about how children learn at each age level, along with essential “tools” and activities they can do together to make learning easy and fun. Parents with children newborn to five-years-old, are encouraged  to sign up for the free district-offered classes.

Eligibility

Parent or legal guardian of children birth to five years of age who live within the boundaries of the Sumner School District.

Out of District Participants

READY! For Kindergarten is offered free to families residing within Sumner School District boundaries. Out-of-district families are required to pay $60 per class.

Who may attend?

A parent or legal guardian (proof of guardianship may be required). One additional adult guest may attend to audit the class, such as a spouse, grandparent, or friend, but only one set of learning materials will be provided per child. The district asks participants to come 5-10 minutes early to sign in and obtain a name tag. Grandparents or other family members providing full-time child care, are advised to call the READY! office.

First-Time Enrollee?

Families new to READY! Classes must attend orientation. Basic materials are available at the “Intro to READY!” mini-class  held 30 minutes before regular class begins. First-timers are asked to sign up for both classes.

Classes

Children begin learning at birth – learn how to give your child a great start!  Families will receive information on how children learn and grow, as well as plenty of simple activities, materials and tools to make learning at home fun.

All-new information is presented three times a year – fall, winter, and spring
