On February 28, Michael Stanley was arrested by the King County Sheriff’s Office for investigation of burglary and rape.  Stanley is a Level III Registered Sex Offender and is homeless.  Stanley, a U.S. citizen, was the subject of news reports in October 2013 when he crossed the border from Canada illegally and registered as a homeless sex offender in King County.

The incident for which Stanley, 49, was arrested occurred in the Bryn Mawr area on Friday morning.  The suspect entered the victim’s home through a window and confronted the victim.  No weapon was used and the victim sustained minor injuries.  The victim is a 69 year-old-female.

In 2013, Stanley cut off his monitoring ankle bracelet in Canada and crossed unchallenged in to the U.S.  A warrant was issued, but Canada chose not to extradite Stanley when he was contacted by law enforcement in Seattle.  Stanley registered with the King County Sheriff’s Office and was classified as a Level III in November 2013.

Registered sex offender classifications are an assessment of the subject’s conviction data and indicate likelihood to re-offend.  Offenders are given a score of I, II, or III.  Level III are considered most likely to re-offend.

Since registering with KCSO, Stanley has been in compliance with his Level III requirements.  Regardless of level, homeless sex offenders are required to check in weekly and must provide an accurate account of where they stay each night.

Stanley will make first court appearance at the Regional Justice Center on Monday, March 2.
