The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission issued a press release reminding the public that a new boating under the influence law will go in effect July 28.

Once the law goes into effect, operating a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs will be punishable by up to $5,000 and 364 days in jail. In addition, any boater who refuses a breathalyzer could be issued a Class 1 Civil Infraction, punishable by a maximum fine of $2050. The legal blood alcohol limit while operating a boat is .08 – the same as when driving a vehicle.

The new law is applicable to motorized and non-motorized vessel operators but does not prohibit passengers from consuming alcohol.
