The Green River Bridge will be closed for a month starting Sept. 15.
According to the Washington State Department of Transportation, an emergency contract was signed to attach new steel along worm beams that support the bridge.
The bridge, also known at the Kummer Bridge or the Dan Evans Bridge, was temporarily closed to traffic on Aug. 4 after an inspection revealed “some advanced corrosion” on the structure, a WSDOT spokesperson said.
The corrosion was first seen in the northbound lane, so it was reduced to one lane on the other side. When corrosion was discovered on the southbound side as well, the bridge was fully closed until Aug. 6, when it re-opened to one lane of alternating traffic.
An average of 11,400 vehicles cross the 93 year-old bridge daily.
According to WSDOT, closing the bridge fully “minimizes long-term disruption and will allow the whole bridge to open sooner.”
The department did not immediately respond to questions about why this bridge closure was also scheduled during the closure of the White River Bridge, which is also expected to last a month or more.
Both bridge closures mean SR 165 is the only highway in and our of Enumclaw.
