The city of Enumclaw will sponsor its 15th annual special collection event for household and large items Saturday.

The event provides local residents the opportunity to dispose of items that typically cannot be shipped off with the weekly trash. Over the years, nearly 1.4 million pounds of materials have been disposed of.

Not allowed will be flatbed or dump trucks and crews will refuse oversized, commercial, contaminated or otherwise unacceptable loads. Where charges apply, crews will be taking cash only.

Crews will be at the Enumclaw library from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., taking items like:

€ tires (up to six per household, free of charge; there's a fee for large truck tires and tires still on rims)

€ motor oil, oil filters, antifreeze, brake and transmission fluid, kerosene and home heating fuel.

€ household batteries (AAAA, AAA, AA, A, B, C and D cell only).

€ lead acid batteries (car, truck, marine and motorcycle).

€ cardboard (flattened, no wax coating).

€ propane tanks (residential only, $5 charge).

€ household goods and clothing (if in good condition). No mattresses or furniture.

€ bulky wood (logs, plywood, pallets and other untreated/unpainted wood; no pegboard, particle board or leaves, grass, small branches or sod). It's asked that a tarp be placed under material for easy removal.

€ appliances and scrap metal (such as auto parts, lawn chairs, stoves, microwaves, barbecues, aluminum, brass, copper and other ferrous and nonferrous metals). There's a $5 charge for hot water heaters.

€ refrigerators, freezers and household air conditioners; there's a $25 charge for each.

€ household recyclables, including newspapers, mixed paper, magazines, glass, aluminum, tin and plastic bottles (No. 1 and No. 2 only).

€ porcelain toilets and sinks; there's a $5 charge and all seats, hardware and wax rings must be removed.

- television sets up to 36-inch screen, $20 charge; those with a screen larger than 36 inches or those in a wood console, $25; projection TV sets, $30.

- electronic equipment such as computers, printers, keyboards, fax machines, scanners and cellular phones will be taken as scrap metal (there is a $10 charge for computer monitors).

Not accepted will be paint, pesticides, household chemicals, cleaning products, window glass and garbage.

For sale at Saturday's event will be backyard composting bins; there's a limit of one per household and the cost is $10.

Hazardous waste

Items considered a household hazardous waste (paint, pesticides, solvents and cleaning products, for example) can be disposed between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday, when the Household Wastemobile comes to town. It will set up in the north parking lot at the King County Fairgrounds.
