Enumclaw will add a second name to its Walk of Fame next week when the city pauses to honor professional basketball player Brian Scalabrine.

The first inductee came Sept. 5, 2005, when the city hosted Kasey Kahne Day in recognition of the Enumclaw native and current NASCAR star.

A memorial marker sits in the ground near the intersection of Griffin Avenue and First Street, just a few feet from the street sign indicating the honorary &#8220Kasey Kahne Drive.”

A marker honoring the 29-year-old Scalabrine will be added next to Kahne's.

The city is finalizing festivities for July 27, built to coincide with the Downtown Sidewalk Sale celebration. On a stage behind the Chamber of Commerce office Mayor John Wise will read a proclamation declaring &#8220Brian Scalabrine Day” in Enumclaw, present the guest of honor with a key to the city and unveil the plaque that will be permanently installed at First and Griffin.

The Enumclaw School District, headed by Superintendent Mike Nelson, will add to the presentation.

Scalabrine will offer a few words and field questions from the audience for about 15 minutes, before settling in for a 20-minute session at an autograph booth. About 100 mini-basketballs bearing Scalabrine's autograph will be passed out.

The ceremony is set to begin at 4:45 p.m. and things will wrap up at 6:30 when the plaque is permanently installed.

Scalabrine - who calls Enumclaw his off-season home - honed his hoop skills as he progressed through Enumclaw High, finally blossoming under the tutelage of then-coach Bill Hawk. He took his game to Highline Community College, where the helped lead the program to back-to-back conference championships. By then, &#8220Red” was a hot commodity and was recruited to the campus of the University of Southern California.

Success followed Scalabrine as he toiled for the Trojans and his combination of talent and tenacity prompted the New Jersey Nets to select the Enumclaw product with the 35th pick in the NBA draft. After four seasons with the Nets, the 6-foot-9, 235-pound Scalabrine was a free agent and, after being courted by a handful of teams, he inked a five-year deal with the Boston Celtics in the summer of 2005.
