The Enumclaw School Board race between Tina McGann and Dan Peterson appears headed for a recount, as the margin between the two remains exceedingly small.

The King County Election Department was tallying votes nearly every day last week as employees counted down toward a Nov. 29 certification of the Nov. 8 general election. Prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, the department had tallied 6,244 votes, with McGann holding a slight lead. She stood at 3,134 votes following the Nov. 22, while Peterson had 3,119. From a percentage standpoint, the election was tilted in McGann’s favor, 49.93 to 49.69.

There were 24 write-in votes.

A final count was to be issued at 4:30 Monday afternoon.

If the spread between the two – who are running for a vacant seat on the school board – remains the same, the Elections Department will be conducting a recount. Election rules dictate a second accounting if the final margin between candidates is within one-half of 1 percent.

Peterson and McGann are chasing the Director District 4 position, which represents the rural area directly north of Enumclaw and everything north of the Green River. Both candidates are from Black Diamond.
