Schools add days to end of year to make up for closures

Enumclaw and White River school district students and teachers received an early season gift – three days without school – as nasty, winter weather shut down classrooms. Those three days stretched right into winter break, which began for both districts Monday and continues through Jan. 2.

Enumclaw and White River school district students and teachers received an early season gift – three days without school – as nasty, winter weather shut down classrooms. Those three days stretched right into winter break, which began for both districts Monday and continues through Jan. 2.

That’s the good news. The bad news, if that’s the way to look at it, is those students and teachers will be making up those days.

Before the first canceled day was done, Enumclaw and White River school district leaders knew what day students and teachers would be back in the classroom making up for the Dec. 17, Thursday and Friday snow closures.

Both districts had snow days placed into their regular calendar, which are part of union negotiations, before the 2008-09 school year started.

Enumclaw will make up its missed school March 20 and May 22 and will tack on additional days, like Friday, onto the end of the school year, extending it now to June 22. An additional change – May 21 will become the full day and May 22 an early release day.

White River’s school make-up days all fall at the end of the school year, in this case June 15, June 16 and June 17.
