It is my privilege to introduce our newest police officer, Daniel Lovejoy, and welcome him to Sumner.

Following his graduation from the Academy this month ,Officer Lovejoy started months of additional training as he prepares to serve our citizens and community.  Before becoming a police officer, Daniel served overseas in the Middle East with the Army and through the State Department.

His duties have included rapid response team and protecting ambassadors. He has already done wonderful things to serve our nation, and now he’s here to helps erve Sumner.

When introduced to the City Council, Officer Lovejoy said it is the fulfillment of a life-long dream to serve in a town like Sumner.

The feeling is mutual.

Many of us see our police officers in situations like blocking roads for a parade or collecting toys for the Sumner Toy Box drive or simply taking a moment to play basketball with students in the park. Sometimes you see them at a traffic stop or at an accident.

Yet, just like big cities, they are involved in things most of us never see or think happen in a small town.

Just this past winter, our officers completed a major drug bust in the afternoon right at Main & Valley, and last week, they investigated a homicide at the truck stop.

As we continue to see regional issues increase–DUI, domestic violence, drug use, mental health issues, and even more serious crimes–our officers have chosen to stand in the gap between us and the not-so-pleasant side of life.  I am thankful, and sometimes amazed, that we get young men and women who are excited to serve this important role.

Sumner is not immune to the crime that goes with being part of a big region.  I highly applaud our officers for not only responding to that crime but also continuing to give us that small-town attention every day.

I am thankful that Officer Lovejoy and his family are willing to join that list of dedicated individuals.  Please thank our officers when you see them, and if you see Officer Lovejoy, welcome him to Sumner.

We’re glad to have him.
