Completion of the first phase of traffic mitigation work on Stewart Road is being celebrated today, Wednesday, with a toast of Stewart brand sodas.
Sumner Mayor Dave Enslow will join Tom Ballard of the Transportation Improvement Board in Pierce County and others at 2 p.m. The first phase of the proposed four-phase construction project widens and rebuilds the north Pierce County arterial, between the White River and Lake Tapps Parkway East.
The project is intended to decrease bottlenecking at the location. The final project links citizens of Sumner and neighboring areas to state Route 167. A two-way left-turn lane, new pavement and signal upgrades are part of the project. Funding for the next phases is not available yet. According to Carmen Palmer, Sumner communications director, Sumner, Pacific and Pierce County are working toward finding a source.
