John Doan, Sumner’s city administrator, will become Tumwater’s city administrator Jan. 26.

The City of Tumwater announced the selection Sumner City Administrator John Doan to be their new city administrator.

Doan began his career in Sumner in September 1991 as the Community Development Director as the city began growth management planning. Doan went on to serve as Sumner’s Parks and Facilities manager and deputy city administrator before becoming city administrator in April 2005.

“Sumner is a very tight-knit community, and I have so enjoyed being welcomed as part of that community while having the opportunity to help Sumner shape its future. While I will miss the many wonderful people I have met, Sumner will remain a part of me,” said Doan.

During Doan’s tenure as city administrator, Sumner has received many honors for its leadership, including the Local Government Commission’s Awanahee Award for the Comprehensive Plan, statewide awards for the city’s urban forestry program, and a top bond rating.

It was under his leadership that the City of Sumner formed a new partnership with East Pierce Fire & Rescue for fire service, converted to a biennial budget, opened the new Rainier View Park, constructed the City Hall renovation, and was awarded numerous grant funds, especially in the areas of transportation and police.

Sumner Mayor Dave Enslow said, “John has done so many wonderful things for us here in Sumner that we will be enjoying the benefits of his knowledge and leadership for many, many years to come.”
