Sumner does the Open | Sumner Mayor Update

Like most anyone else, and even though I'm not a golfer, I can't help but talk about the U.S. Open being held this week in our county. Actually, this is more than a bandwagon kind of thing. Sumner and its businesses are actually getting a lot of mileage out of this event.

Like most anyone else, and even though I’m not a golfer, I can’t help but talk about the U.S. Open being held this week in our county. Actually, this is more than a bandwagon kind of thing. Sumner and its businesses are actually getting a lot of mileage out of this event.

If you are lucky enough to go, you’ll see gorgeous pots of flowers in Spectator Square and in hospitality areas. If they look familiar, that’s because they’re from our own Windmill Gardens. And while the main coffee tent may feature that rather large coffee company from Seattle, inside the hospitality areas, people are enjoying Sumner’s own Dillanos Coffee, born and roasted right here.  The Old Cannery has been highly involved in county-wide efforts to greet both the USGA, FOX, and the hospitality caterers.  In fact, every media person got a care-pack from the County that featured The Old Cannery fudge, so we can all imagine Joe Buck enjoying amidnight snack from Sumner.  Sumner’s own Holiday Inn Express & Suites is full of out-of-town Open goers, and the front desk reported they are happy and excited.

And, Open in Sumner last weekend got Sumner some coverage in The News Tribune, KING-5 (news) and Evening Magazine, so if people didn’t make it for the weekend itself, they’re definitely hearing about us and will hopefully plan a trip.  Even the USGA themselves sent us an email, and they sound quite tickled with how Sumner has rolled out the rhubarb-red carpet.

Thank you to all the stores, businesses and individuals who are working so hard to make guests feel so welcome.  The USGA sent Danny Sink out about three years ago to prepare for this Open.  Even in his first month, Danny commented that he had never experienced such friendly people ready to welcome guests from around the world. That has held true through the Open itself because that’s kind of how we roll anyway. Way to go, Sumner!
