A standout orator from Sumner helped Oregon State University continue its reputation of having a strong debate team.

Kyle Bidwell, a graduate of Sumner High School and a junior at OSU, recieved a gold medal at the Greater Portland Intercollegiate Debate League tournament of 2011. Bidwell’s medals were in the open (experienced_ debate category and for second-best speaker.

OSU hosted the tournament for the first time and schools from the Portland area, Longview and Clackamas competed.

“It is nice to return from the holidays and be able to jump right back into competition. It is even better when former students come back and support the team.” said Mark Porrovecchio, the team’s director.
