During the Sumner City Council meeting Mayor Dave Enslow happily announced the return of Sumner’s hanging basket program.

Sumner suspended the hanging basket program as a way cost-saving measure, but it is back by demand, yet with fewer baskets.

Enslow said people in Sumner repeatedly asked him about whether the baskets would be placed again and it became obvious it was something citizens valued.

“This is a feature of some of the quaintness in Sumner,” he said.

Hanging baskets will be installed nslow said the program is not as large as before and includes approximately 30 baskets.

The hanging baskets are being purchased by the Sumner Downtown Association and Enslow said maintenance crews will provide watering when they have some spare time, so no extra cost is incurred on the city.

When the weather is warmer, baskets will be placed and Enslow said the plants in them require a good amount of care.

“They don’t tolerate a lot. They’re going to need some attention,” he said.

He said it’s asking a lot to put more responsibility on a city with a reduced staff, but it is important nonetheless.

“It was just a matter of sort of prioritizing,” he said.
