Sumner High School’s FFA team leaves Pullman with awards in hand

Three members of the meats team took the top three spots in their competition. More after the jump.

Throughout May, Sumner High School’s FFA Program competed in numerous state-level competitions racking up nine top 10 finishes and sending three students on to the national competition.

Led by advisors Rusty Finch and Greg Pile, students participated in more than 10 contests where they showed off their knowledge and skills in a variety of agricultural fields.

A majority of the competitions were held at the Washington State University campus in Pullman, Wash.

The Sumner Dairy Foods team finished in first place, with Stephanie VanVolkenburg finishing third, Rebecca Elias finishing sixth and Megan Cihak finishing seventh.

The FARM for kids team also racked up a first-place finish, as did the Meats Evaluation and Technology team.

On the Meats team, Sumner students swept the top three with Carly Lange placing first, Natasha Moffitt placing second and Cihak coming in third. Annie Elias also placed 10th.

Sumner also led the way with a first-place finish in Natural Resources with Cihak finishing in the top spot followed by Kassandra Ognoskie in second, Dan Green in sixth, Tim Bush in eighth and Amanda Lee in ninth.

The school’s Food Science team landed a third place finish for the Spartans with Ognoskie placing seventh individually.

Sumner’s Poultry Evaluation team also pulled a third-place finish with Moffitt finsihing fifth and Cihak coming in eighth.

Sumner also place fourth in Chapter Scrapbook, fifth in Livestock Evaluation and eighth in Marketing Plan.

The Dairy Foods, Meats Evaluation and Technology, and Natural Resources teams will travel to Indianapolis, Indiana in October to compete at a national level.
