Beginning in the 2016-17 School Year, all middle and high school students in the Sumner School District will be assigned a Chromebook for instructional purposes to use at school and home.

Like a textbook, the device will be checked out to students at the beginning of the school year.  Students will be given an orientation on the device and expectations for use at school and at home.

The Sumner School District views the use of electronic resources as central to the delivery of its educational program and expects that all students will use electronic resources as an essential part of their learning experiences.

An effective public education system develops students who are globally aware, engaged, and capable of managing their lives and careers. Students need to be proficient and safe users of information, media, and technology to succeed in a digital world.

Therefore, the District will use electronic resources accessed on Chromebooks as a powerful and compelling means for students to learn core subjects and applied skills in relevant and rigorous ways.  The use of Chromebooks at home and at school will enable educators and students to access digital curriculum, communicate, collaborate and create; to think and solve problems; to manage their work; and to take ownership of their lives.

Elementary students will continue to have access to digital resources in the classroom and use Chromebooks in school only.

Look for more information in the months to come about this exciting initiative! Future details will include communication regarding distribution, safety, assurance (insurance) and guidelines for use. Instructional Services and the Technology Department are working in partnership with schools to finalize details and implementation plans.

Funding for the initiative came from the 2014 voter-approved Technology Levy.
