Sumner is closer to getting a YMCA facility after the passing of an amendment at Thursday’s meeting of the Pierce County Regional Council.

The YMCA is a project which is a long time coming and the proposed location is an obstacle to the development but the amendment allows the next step to approving the location.

Sumner City Council member Matt Richardson said property currently owned by Investco is to be donated, but in order for the YMCA facility to be built on the land, an extension of the Urban Growth Area is needed.

The land where the facility is to go is not currently designated as the proper category under Pierce County planning.

“We would have to move the Urban Growth Area (UGA),” Richardson said.

The UGA would need to be extended south to encompass the Investco land.

Richardson served on an ad hoc committee which discussed revision to the planning. The Ad Hoc committee submitted recommendations to the PCRC. Allow for the cities to prove they’re not putting an undue burden on the comprehensive plan.

The recommendation was adopted by the Growth Management Coordinating Committee took the recommendation and passed them on to PCRC.
