A dog show in Sumner Saturday and Sunday aimed to create awareness of and improve the health of a specific breed of dog.

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at It’s a Dog’s World in Sumner, the Havana Silk Dog Association of America hosted an informational show on the Havana silks dog breed.

Jennifer Haugland of the group said she hopes people learn more about the dogs.

The Havana Silk Dogs is a new name for a re-created old breed from Cuuba, Haugland stated.

The Havanese Breed is the old breed, which had health issues due to poor breeding.

“We wanted to bring breeding back to the original standard,” Haugland said.

Health problems may include, among other things, dwarfism and blindness.

Haugland hopes the organization and others like it can breed healthier dogs.
