Sunday morning apartment fire forces one out of home

Firefighters from East Pierce Fire and Rescue responded to multiple reports of a fire at an apartment complex Sunday morning in Sumner.

When the firefighters arrived at the two-story Spartan Arms Apartments on the 1600 block of Washington Street, smoke was pouring from the front door, window and under the eaves of an upstairs apartment unit.

The fire was reported just before 9 a.m. by members of the nearby Sumner Presbyterian Church who were arriving for Sunday service. No one was home at the time of the fire. Sumner Police evacuated the rest of the building.

“Although the firefighters were able to contain the blaze to the single unit, the estimated loss is approximately $50,000, including structure and contents,” said East Pierce Deputy Fire Marshal Lane Walthers.

The cause of the fire has not been determined. No one was injured.

The American Red Cross was called to provide temporary living arrangements for the renter who lost her apartment and belongings.
