The Bonney Lake Police Department’s 20th annual Citizen’s Academy will begin March 18 at the Public Safety Building, 18421 Veterans Memorial Drive. Registration is open now.

The seven week course is intended to provide an understanding of police services to the general public. Those participating should plan on attending twice weekly, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, plus one Saturday.

The curriculum includes demonstrations by Metro SWAT and K-9 units. Classes will cover criminal law, patrol procedures, driving under the influence enforcement, violence, narcotics and more. An emphasis on student participation will provide hands-on learning with mock scenes, firearms simulators and emergency vehicle operations.

Notebooks will be provided and the course will conclude with a celebratory dinner and awards ceremony.

Officer Daron Wolschleger said the department is proud of the academy and recommends it to anyone who is interested in what it has to offer.

“It is an amazing opportunity to get an inside look at how the BLPD operates,” Wolschleger said. “It also provides education on how to better protect yourself and keep your neighborhood safe.”

All applicants must work or reside in Bonney Lake, be at least 18-years-old or a high school senior and possess a valid driver’s license. Applicants will be subject to a background check. Those with felony convictions or outstanding warrants will not pass through the application process.
