UPDATE: Pierce Transit levy headed for failure

With the second round of ballots counted, voters in Pierce County appear to have rejected Proposition 1, Pierce Transit’s sales tax increase.

As of Wednesday afternoon, the no votes continue to lead, 54.28 percent against to 45.72 percent in favor of the measure.

With nearly 135,000 votes counted, no votes are ahead by more than 11,000 votes and though votes remain to be counted, it appears unlikely the measure will pass.

The proposition would have increased the sales tax 0.3 percent, or 3 cents on a $10 purchase, to help fund the transit system, which has seen revenues drop during the recession.

The Bonney Lake city council unanimously passed a resolution opposing the measure.

If the measure fails, east Pierce County stands to lose much if not all of its bus service.

Further results will be released a 4p.m. Thursday.
