Weather blamed for seven-car pileup Wednesday night

Snow and ice are blamed for a seven-car pileup at Sumner-Buckley Highway and 214th Avenue East in Bonney Lake early Wednesday evening. Remarkably, no one was injured.

East Pierce Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Jay Adams said that the low-speed crash on Sand Hill resulted primarily in fender bender-type damage to the vehicles.

Despite the weather, East Pierce firefighters saw only a slight increase in 9-1-1 calls for the day. There were 30 calls during a 24-hour period for the entire district, compared to an average call volume of 27 to 28 per day.

“Although most of the calls were not associated with the weather, there were a few,” Adams says. In addition to the pileup, there were a couple of falls and a rollover Wednesday at 5:46 a.m. on West Valley Avenue. Adams reports that no one was injured in that accident.

Firefighters responded to a vehicle fire at the 1700 block of 16th Street in Sumner. According to the owner, he started his van and went back inside the home when a passerby knocked on his door to inform him that his van was on fire.
