Construction work on I-90 will likely create extra congestion on I-5 in Seattle this weekend. The work is part of the final stage of a project to add carpool lanes to the outer roadways of I-90 between Bellevue and Seattle.

The work also sets the stage for light rail service across I-90. Eastbound I-90 traffic will be detoured to the express lanes from 11 p.m. Friday, Feb. 27, to 5 a.m. Monday, March 2, to allow crews to upgrade systems in the eastbound Mount Baker and Mercer Island tunnels. Drivers should expect delays on eastbound I-90 during the closure and consider using alternate routes like SR 520 or I-405 to cross the lake.

This is the first of up to 30 weekend directional closures of I-90 over the next 28 months. Traffic will be detoured to the I-90 express lanes during the directional closures.
