White River seniors to host online car show

The annual car show is normally hosted at the Log Show fairgrounds, but COVID-19 made the local students pivot.

Every year, the White River High School Motorsports Club hosts a car show at the Buckley Log Show Fairground.

But while COVID-19 has set many other events back, the body of 30-or-so students decided to push on and host the show virtually this year, said senior Hannah Watson, co-president of the club.

For those not in the know, the annual show normally helps raise money for the club so students have the tools and parts necessary to hone their craft. This year, however, the students voted to waive the $10 entrance fee, so anyone and everyone can enter.

Watson said the entrance fee goes toward helping the Motorsports Club either goes toward putting on the next car show, or is used to buy parts for the shop truck.

“It’s in process right now, since we can’t go back and build it right now,” Watson said, adding that the club’s goal was to have the truck finished for the annual Enumclaw Homecoming Parade every fall, although they might not be able to meet that deadline.

To enter your vehicle — be it a car, truck, semi, or tractor — simply email motorsports@whiteriver.wednet.edu with a photo and description of the vehicle. There are 25 total categories to enter, but students will sort through the entries to determine which vehicle goes into which competition.

Winners will be featured on the White River School District’s Facebook page at the very least, though the club and school staff are pursuing other options as well.

The last day to enter the show is May 16, and winners will be announced within the week. So far, around 50 people have entered, Watson said, a little less than half of their normal pull, though the fault clearly lies with the ongoing pandemic and not the enthusiasm of the students.

Those who simply enjoying perusing the vehicles can also join in by emailing motorsports@whiteriver.wednet.edu requesting photos of entries be sent to them. Students and staff are working on ways to share photos of all the entires, but are promising that at least photos of the winners will be sent out.
