Wildfire smoke from California, Oregon will mostly pass overhead this weekend

Hazy skies will hopefully be the worst of the smoke visiting the Puget Sound.

Wildfire smoke from California and Oregon is making its way into Western Washington this week, but the good news is that at least for now, it’s mostly going over our heads.

The smoke is contributing to the hazy skies seen around the Puget Sound area, said Seattle National Weather Service meteorologist Maddie Kristell, but is not significantly affecting air quality at ground level.

“Fortunately right now, it’s lofted up high enough in the atmosphere where it’s not degrading surface air quality, but it is contributing to those hazy skies, and maybe even the faintest bit of smell,” Kristell said Thursday.

The Puget Sound Clean Air Agency predicts “good to moderate” air quality throughout the Puget Sound this weekend due to consistent marine air flow. And a weather system bringing light rain this weekend could help clear the smoke out too, Kristell said.

After the weekend, there are indications that more smoke could come in around Tuesday or Wednesday, but it’s still too early to say, Kristell said. Meteorologists can only predict smoke patterns out so far. In any case, Kristell said, now would be a good time for those with sensitive respiratory conditions to prepare their homes, such as changing air filters, in case more smoke does come in this summer.

And for those who have put off enjoying the blue skies and fresh air of the outdoors so far this summer, there’s no time like the present.
