A woman died in the aftermath of a confrontation with Pierce County Sheriff’s deputies and a Bonney Lake police officer that turned deadly when she drew and fired a gun Sunday.

The woman, 38-year-old Seatac resident Holly Crahay, was reportedly seen Sunday, before 3 p.m., driving recklessly in a shopping center parking lot near 196th Avenue East. Her car was pursued by a Pierce County Sheriff’s deputy down Elhi Hill. Circumstances of the pursuit led the deputy to use a “pursuit intervention technique” to pin Crahay’s car against a guardrail.

A second deputy and a Bonney Lake police officer arrived as backup on the scene.

It was at that time the suspect reportedly opened fire, shattering the window of a patrol car and cutting a deputy’s face.

Law enforcement returned fire to match the introduction of deadly force. A pit bull exited the vehicle. Law enforcement shot and killed the dog.

Crahay was shot during the exchange of fire. She was taken to a Tacoma hospital in critical condition and died of her injuries overnight. An investigation into the details of the shooting is in progress. The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s office autopsied  Crahay’s body Monday. All law enforcement officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending the investigation, as is standard whenever an officer discharges a firearm in the line of duty.

“Everybody was doing their job and, unfortunately, the suspect put the officers in a situation where it was necessary to use the force they did,” Bonney Lake Police Chief Dana Powers said.
