Dorothy Knutson

Dorothy “Dorri” Ann Basteyns Knutson died April 28, 2013, at her home.

She was born Feb. 9, 1920, in Enumclaw to Frank and Marie (Nielsen) Basteyns. She was raised on the family farm with siblings Donald, Wallace, Elwood, Beatrice and Betty. She graduated from Enumclaw High in 1938 and attended a year of community college in Port

Angeles, Wash. She began a career with the U.S. Postal Service as a temporary employee in Port Angeles and progressed until, in 1972, she became the first woman in Washington state to become a postmaster at a first-class post office. She was named Woman of the Year by the Business and Professional Women’s Organization that year and remained a postmaster until retiring to Salishan, Ore., in 1982.

Following retirement she married Clark Knutson. They traveled extensively and he taught her how to hunt and fish. They settled in Newport, Ore. She received honors for her artwork and was involved with her church, golf clubs, Peo, Elks, Soroptimists and Business and Professional Women.

She is survived by daughter Nancy Carter; daughter-in-law Li Pettett; sister-in-law Dorothy Basteyns; five grandchildren, 13 great=grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her siblings; son Jim Pettett; son-in-law C.B. Carter; and husbands Gene Pettett, Bruce Thorpe and Clark Knutson.

Relatives and friends are invited to a memorial service at 2 p.m. Thursday, May 2, at First Presbyterian Church, 227 N.E. 12th St. in Newport, Ore., and also are invited to a graveside service at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 4, at Enumclaw Evergreen Memorial Park in Enumclaw.

In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to one the following organizations she cared about: First Presbyterian Church in Newport, Ore.; First Presbyterian Church in Yuma, Ariz.; the PEO group of Newport; or My Sisters Place in Newport.
