FAITH CORNER: Celebrate life from its beginning

“For You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, Your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in Your book before one of them came to be” (Psalm 139:13-16).

What is life? An act of chance when egg and sperm meet and begin the growth of new flesh? An event like other events in life that can either be welcomed if convenient, or dismissed if not?

What seems wisest when answering this question is to consult the author of life and let him speak. And so, as we see above, God the creator does speak through David, the psalmist —

Each life is a creation of God almighty. (“You created my inmost being”)

Each life begins in the mother’s womb where the creator uniquely designs and knits together not just tissue, but the “inmost being” of that individual — the very soul and personality of who that life is to be. (“You created my inmost being; You knit me together in my mother’s womb”)

Every part of the development process within the womb is overseen by the creator of life. (“My frame was not hidden from You when I was made in the secret place . . . Your eyes saw my unformed body”)

The author of life knows each one of his created beings in a personal way before the day of birth. (“All the days ordained for me were written in Your book before one of them came to be”)

Jan. 22 marked the 38th year in America since abortion of life in the womb was legalized. During this time more than 50 million children have been executed at the altar of “choice.” How does the author and creator of life feel about the issue? Listen to what He says about one life — Jeremiah’s life — during conception:

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations.

Jeremiah 1:5

What is life? Every life is the loving gift of a sovereign creator, because each life is created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27), uniquely designed and knit together in the womb of the mother with a purpose ordained by God himself. Every life is a life that he loves and cares for!

May God forgive us for and deliver us from the wrongful, selfish belief as a nation that life is a “choice” rather than a divine gift by a loving God. Were he to “choose” to terminate life as a convenience to his agenda, it would not merely be babies in the womb that would cease breathing!
