No use leaving home, many activities in town

Thinking about taking a vacation but not sure when to plan it? Well before you finalize those plans, think about what we have going on downtown. There’s no sense in leaving home to find something fun to do with your family and friends when you can find it for free in your own backyard. July kicks off our summer event season and there’s plenty of entertainment in your hometown.

First, a big thanks to the Arts Commission for scheduling a fun Friday night concert series starting Friday at 6:30 p.m. in Heritage Park with Pat Moss and New Frontier performing legendary blues and rock from 1960s and 1970s. It’s a perfect pre-Fourth of July family outing in the park that is free and fun so don’t miss it.

And on July 10 don’t miss the Celtic Maidens’ Irish tribute at 6 p.m. The Hammermaster girls will be opening for Kellee Bradley, acclaimed vocalist and songwriter, who will perform at 6:30 p.m.

After you get home from the concert, it might be a good idea to give Fido a bath, clip his nails and maybe brush his teeth in preparation of our Mutts off Main event on July 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Heritage Park. It’s free to attend and registration is just $5 for the doggie contests and the agility course. All registrants are eligible to participate in the high noon Main Street Mutt Parade.

You won’t want to miss the opening ceremony at 10 a.m. with the Old Cannery Fire Truck and Madame DeVille who will be arriving in a 1930 REO roadster.

Ascension Productions Director Petra Karr has hinted that there will be black spotted dogs in the opening ceremony. Or you could enter the hot dog eating contest or bring your wiener dog to the dashing doxie race which is a hoot every year. The closing ceremony, which starts at 2 p.m., will include the Bark and Bubble and all the registered mutt and masters are eligible to participate.

And if you feel like volunteering, do I have some good news for you. There are plenty of opportunities for getting involved and meeting new friends at our downtown events. There’s fun a-plenty at the Mutts off Main event and even our Classy Chassis Car Show on Aug. 23. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Karr at ascensionprod@msn.com for more information.

Now you may think I’m kidding about not scheduling your vacation until you check with our event calendar, but we have plenty of residents and volunteers downtown who do just that. It’s gotten to be my favorite running joke in the office. So if it’s Friday in July, pack up the kids and the dog, grab your lawn chairs and blanket and head to Heritage Park for an evening of musical entertainment. If you get a chance, pop into my office and say “hi” or grab an arts commissioner and tell them thanks for the tunes.

We love visitors and it’s great to see so many people spending time in downtown Sumner.
