It’s my birthday today. That makes me a Scorpio. I don’t know much about astrology, but I know enough to understand that, rather than being born on the cusp of anything, I’m solidly in the center of Scorpio’s reign.
Some of the world’s earliest archaeological text suggest both astrology and astronomy probably originated about 1100 B.C. in Babylonia. Though cavemen undoubtedly worshiped the stars long before that, they left no literary record. In the ancient world, astrology and astronomy were inseparable, but they split around 1600 and, today, they are quite different; that is, astronomy is the scientific study of the movement and positions of celestial bodies – stars, planets, galaxies, etc. – while astrology teaches the planets of our solar system can reveal secret truths, influence present events, help interpret past events and can predict the future.
Approximately 31 percent of Americans believe in astrology. In fact, some pretty influential 20th century minds felt certain aspects of the field were viable; for example, Carl Jung thought the “descriptive powers” of astrology were useful in psychological analysis.
A former bartender in the Lee lounge was into astrology. Every time I walked into the place, she’d lay the day’s horoscope on me. I’d carefully read and study the damned thing, hoping it might hint at some liaison between us. No such luck.
Personally, I’m too scientifically-minded to cultivate much interest in the zodiac. Mostly, the subject just works well as a topic for light conversation. That was especially true back during my disco days, when “What’s your sign?” became one of the more popular pick-up lines.
Yet, I’m also open-minded enough to realize that, even though science appears to be our best method of exploring the world around us, ultimately it can’t explain a much of anything. Therefore, I have to admit that astrology could possibly have something going for it, however feeble. Anything is possible.
And this being the case, I’d point out that Scorpio is quite a fascinating sign that generally revolves around power, intensity and extremes. He’s very emotional, loves quite deeply and is loyal to his partner. Scorpio is also a rather mysterious fellow who may prefer intuition over logic and is known to dabble in the occult and paranormal. Scorpios govern the genitals, making them the most sexually-charged sign in the zodiac. Couple this with their traits of power, intensity and extremes and you’ll realize that one shouldn’t spark their carnal side unless you’re prepared for an all-night session of passionate, sensual and kinky love-making that will leave you completely exhausted and frayed.
