Trainer Tom Wenzel holds a pair of aces in the $50,000 Boeing Handicap for older fillies and mares at one mile on Sunday, July 5.

Wenzel, who finished first, second and third in last year’s race with Stopshoppingdebbie, Goin to the Window and Blueberry Smoothie, nominated the one-two punch of Kikisoblu and Lady Rosberg to this year’s Boeing.

A combined six-for-seven with five stakes wins in 2015, 4-year-old Kikisoblu and 5-year-old Lady Rosberg have been the dominant older fillies and mares at Emerald Downs and Turf Paradise. Kikisoblu swept the first two races this season at Emerald Downs, romping by 4 ¼ lengths in the Hastings Handicap and by 6 ¼ lengths in the Washington State Legislators Stakes. Lady Rosberg asserted her class at Turf Paradise, winning three stakes events—two on turf, one on dirt.

Although she has never raced farther than 6 ½ furlongs, Kikisoblu figures to be favored in the Boeing. A Kentucky-bred by Kodiak Kowboy, she has towered over the local fillies and mares and Wenzel is among the track’s top trainers at “stretching a horse out.” Lady Rosberg, trained by Valorie Lund in Phoenix, has a versatile running style and already has proven ability around two turns, winning four races at a mile or longer.

Lady of the Nile, second in the Washington State Legislators and third in the Hastings, has two career wins at a mile, while Madame Pele has stakes wins each of the last two seasons at Emerald Downs.

The final prep for the championship Emerald Distaff on August 16, the Boeing Handicap concludes a big weekend of holiday racing, featuring the Carl’s Jr. Fireworks Extravaganza on Friday, July 3, and free admission on Saturday, July 4.
