Victories Thursday and Saturday gave the White River High girls a subregional title and the No. 1 seed into the 2A West Central District basketball tournament.

The Hornets, winners of 14 straight, received a first round bye. They next play at 8 p.m. Thursday at Curtis. The opponent will be either Fife or Tyee.

A dozen teams are taking part in the district tournament and half will advance to the field of 16 in the 2A state tourney. Eight survivors will gather at the Yakima Valley Sundome for a three-day tournament March 3-5.

White River’s experience began Thursday with a 50-43 victory over Foster.

A barrage of 3-pointers by Brooke Paulson gave the Hornets an early 14-5 lead, but Foster’s quickness and athleticism gave White River fits. The home team took the lead in the latter stages of the game, but the Hornets quit making costly turnovers, maintained their composure and earned the victory.

Paulson scored 24.

Saturday saw the Hornets taking on Sumner for the third time and, just as in the regular-season meetings, it was a close contest. Sparked by Rani Wiegand’s 14 fourth-quarter points, White River bounced back from a six-point deficit and won 60-54.

Wiegand finished with 29 points.
