Bh Lisas Boy broke his own track record Sunday with a resounding 1 ¾-length victory under Javier Matias in the fifth running of the $54,000 Bank of America Emerald Downs Championship Challenge for Quarter Horses.

Running 440 yards in a blistering :21.376 seconds, Bh Lisas Boy broke the mark of :21.492 he set two weeks ago in the first division f the trials. Owned, trained and bred by Bill Hoburg of Kennewick, Wash., Bh Lisas Boy paid $5, $3.40 and $2.60 as the top betting choice.

A 3-year-old Idaho-bred by Mighty Invictus-Apollo Snowbound, Bh Lisas Boy is 8-2-0 in 12 career starts with earnings of $76,745, including $33,161 for Sunday’s win. Bh Lisas Boy, who broke his maiden in a $3,500 claiming race last year at Les Bois Park, now has stakes wins at four different tracks and also is 5-for-5 with Matias riding.

Bh Lisas Boy—who had a habit of tardy breaks—turned Sunday’s race into a laugher. Breaking like a rocket from the No. 6 post-position, he immediately opened a daylight lead, and was never threatened to the wire. The 1 ¾-length winning margin broke Chicks Special Angel’s stakes record of 1-½ lengths set last year, and Bh Lisas Boy also became the first 3-year-old to win the race.

“Today, I was waiting to get a nice break,” said Matias, an amazing 8-for-14 this season in Quarter Horse races. “He’s a very nice horse, but when I rode him last time I used him too much, but I was waiting today, so I’m happy for that. I’m happy to win that trophy.”

Bidding to repeat her win from last year, Chicks Special Angel never really got untracked and finished seventh. Breaking from the No. 1 post, jockey Eddie Aceves said the defending champion had a myriad of mishaps.

“She lost her back leg when she tried to release so hard, and then she ducked in a little bit to the rail,” Aceves said. “It was difficult to overcome all of that.”

Alota Action, a 17-to-1 long shot ridden by Martin Arriaga, held second and paid $11.60 and $5.80. A 7-year-old California-bred mare, Alota Action also finished third in last year’s Bank of America Emerald Downs Championship Challenge.

Flyin Lion, with Leonel Camacho-Flores riding, finished third and paid $3.60.

Cascade Dynamite, Larryville, Time for Jesse Lee, Chicks Special Angel, Patty Okey and Snowbound Superchick rounded out the order of finish.
