The Bonney Lake High girls might have been winless during their first six outings, but a holiday tournament appears to have cured the Panthers’ woes.
The Bonney Lake crew captured victories over a pair of larger, Class 4A foes during the Carly Stewell Invitational and head into league play on a winning note.
The Panthers first took a 47-45 decision over Bethel Dec. 28 and followed that with a 48-42 triumph over Kentlake Dec. 29. The tournament was played at Kentlake.
Against Bethel, the Panthers spent three quarters building a healthy 38-28 lead, then held on as the Braves attempted a fourth-period rally. The Panthers won behind a balanced scoring attack that saw Carli Elwin, Savannah Moorehouse and Naomi Pounds score 12 points each. Hannah Messner chipped in 10.
The second day of the tourney had the Panthers and host Falcons tied at 25 at halftime. Bonney Lake made its move with a 14-9, third quarter advantage, then outscored Kentlake during the final eight minutes to seal the win.
Elwin had a big night, scoring a game-high 21 points. The offense also was boosted by Messner’s 10 points.
