BLHS VOLLEYBALL: Panthers steam on

Bonney Lake High’s volleyball team has been a lot like a steamroller this season, flattening anything that dares to cross its path.

The Panther six-pack had its first South Puget Sound League 3A trial Thursday when it traveled to Lakes High and passed the test with flying colors, overwhelming the Lancers 25-22, 25-17, 25-21.

Senior team captains Taylor Watkins and Chelsea Merkel made contributions in the victory as Watkins served up three aces and smashed a dozen kills, while Merkel registered 24 assists from her setter position.

“I am very pleased that we’ve been able to get out to such a positive start on the season,” coach Shirley Baker said. “Beginnings such as this one sort of set the stage for success later on down the road.”

Baker said Merkel and Watkins are doing a great job of keeping the rest of the team focused. “Those two lead by example, because they really do hold themselves to a higher standard.”
