Shon Wilson recently qualified for the American Motorcyclist Association Air Nautiques Amateur National Motocross Championship at Loretta Lynn Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tenn. Competition begins Sunday and continues through Aug. 8.

The 21-year-old Bonney Lake rider who suits up for locally-founded Baker Racing Technolgies will be competing in 250F and 450F Pro classes as well as in the 250F and 450F Pro Sport classes.

Racers compete nationwide from March through June in the Area Qualifiers and Regional Championships to determine the final rider roster for the national competition. According to its Web site, the AMA Air Nautiques Amateur National Motocross Championships have become the premiere amateur national series in the United States and the proving ground for America’s future professional supercross and motocross stars.

Wilson placed 13th among 57 competitors for the 250 Pro Class, 13th of 68 for the 450 Pro Class and 23rd of 58 for Unlimited Pro in the Northwest National Motocross Series. And that was without attending all the races due to his presence on the national circuit.

Joshua McBride from Ravensdale earned a fifth-place finish in the 450 Intermediate Modified Class. The top four in every class qualify for the amateur national motocross championship, but he was expected to go as an alternate and fill a position should a vacancy open.

In the Northwest National Motocross Series, he placed fifth among 58 riders in the 450 Intermediate Class and eighth out of 84 in the 250 Intermediate Class.

Tanner Morris, who lives in Sumner, races the 85 Intermediate class and the Supermini class. He had hopes of qualifying for the Lorretta Lynn contest but broke his wrist. He has gone to Lynn’s in the past, finishing 10th in the 50cc 4-6 Stock class.

In the Northwest National Motocross Series, he placed seventh out of 36 riders in the 85 Intermediate Class and 11th out of 73 in the 85-150cc Supermini Class.

Buckley’s Jamie, Wyatt and Tony Baker also compete in the Northwest National Motocross Series. Wyatt earned a fifth-place finish out of 35 racers in the Unlimited Beginner Class. He was also 39th out of 92 in the 250 Beginner Class. Jamie finished sixth out of 19 in the Women Beginner Class, while Tony was fifth out of 45 in the 40-plus Sportsmen Class.

Riding for Team American Electrical Service are Tyler Hansen and Cody and Quentin Money.

Bonney Lake’s 15-year-old Hansen was in the running at the Amateur National Motocross Championship regional qualifier at Washougal MX Park until he suffered a broken scapula out of the gate during one of his races. He had a fantastic Northwest National Motocross Series, besting a field of 47 riders in the Unlimited Intermediate Class, finishing second out of 84 in the 250 Intermediate Class and finishing fourth out of 58 in the 450 Intermediate Class.

Cody Money from Buckley got banged up in practice at the Washougal regional competition. His broken nose and several bruised ribs sidelined him from competition. He did compete in the 250 Junior Class and Unlimited Junior Class for the Northwest National Motocross Series.

The younger Money, Quentin, was tops locally in the beginner class. In the national series, he placed eighth out of 92 in the 250 beginner class, third of 30 in the 450 Beginner Class and eighth of 35 in the Unlimited Beginner Class.

According to Jamie Baker, the two teams, BRT and AES, are joining forces in a one-time event to put the fastest local riders on the track for the Pacific Racing Organization’s Top Gun Team Shootout at Washougal MX Park in early September.
