Five Hornets in the championship round wasn’t enough for Enumclaw High to capture the Spud Valley Invitational wrestling tournament at Sedro Woolley Saturday. The Hornets finished second to Orting, 229-213. Enumclaw had edged the Cardinals the prior weekend in Buckley.

“We knew they were one of the best teams around,” EHS coach Lee Reichert said. “We knew they were for real at White River.

“We were expecting great competition and we found it.”

The Hornets got titles from Sam Bauer, 125 pounds, Jason Gray, 140, Jacob Jokela, 145, and Conner Elder, 160.

Once again the 145-pound final pitted EHS wrestlers Jokela and Josh Musick against each other. Jokela earned the win with a 5-2 decision.

Bauer captured his crown with a 9-5 decision over Antonio Brown of Orting. Gray’s title came with a 20-11 major decision over Niko Hughes of Kelso and Elder claimed his championship with an 11-8 win over Arlington’s Chris Myers.

The Hornets also got a third-place finish from 215-pound Michael Staples. Brad McCutchen, heavyweight, and Tyler Rewoldt, 189 pounds, finished fourth. Fifth-place finishes went to Marcus Nichols, 112 pounds, Hunter File, 119, and Kyle Young, 130. Chance Mitchell carried home a sixth-place finish at 135 pounds for EHS.

The Hornets thumped Lakes 65-12 in South Puget Sound League 3A action Dec. 10. They meet Peninsula at 7 tonight, Wednesday, in Chuck Smith Gymnasium in the battle of league unbeatens. The Seahawks are 2-0 in the early season.

Thursday, the Hornets head to Kentwood for a tri-dual contest with the Conquerors and Yelm, then it’s off to Rogers High in Puyallup for the Holiday Tournament Saturday.
