EHS GIRLS GOLF: Hornets win eighth straight title

Enumclaw High’s Kelly Sweeney birdied the final hole to finish at 6-over par 41 for 21 points Thursday at Enumclaw Golf Course to lead the Hornets to an 85-23 win over Lakes and an eighth-straight league title.

The Hornets also keep their win streak alive. The girls have not lost a league match since the 2004-05 season. Since 1990, the Lady Hornets have racked up 14 league crowns and been runner-up three other seasons.

Postseason play begins Thursday with the South Puget Sound League 3A Medalist Tournament at Eagles Pride Golf Course at Fort Lewis. The top golfers there advance to Tuesday’s state qualifying tournament, also at Fort Lewis.

Thursday against Lakes, Janie Francis finished at 47. Torey Schreinder and Caitlin Runland carded 50s and Kaylee Salsbury and Claire Hinman each shot 51.

Sweeney delivered a 4-over par 39 performance Oct. 6 on the Hornets’ home course to lead the team to a 96-44 SPSL 3A win over Sumner.

The EHS junior was followed by the matching 45s of teammates Runland and Francis. One stroke behind was Schreiner. Salsbury and Hinman rounded out the scoring at 50 and 55, respectively.
