The Enumclaw High doubles tandem of King Gisa and William Stuenkel will be in action later this week, competing in the West Central District tennis tournament.
The courts will be packed Friday and Saturday, Oct. 31 and Nov. 1, at the Boeing Employees Tennis Club in Kent. On hand will be the top singles and doubles players from the Class 4A and Class 3A ranks throughout the district.
The ultimate reward is a spot in the state tournament, which takes place in the spring. Gisa and Stuenkel will be competing for a berth in the 3A state festivities, slated for May 22-23 at the Vancouver Tennis Center in Southwest Washington.
From the 3A district level, six doubles teams and six singles entries will advance to the spring tourney.
The Gisa/Stuenkel duo advanced to West Central District play with a second-place showing at last week’s North Puget Sound League 3A tourney. They received a first-round bye and then defeated three opponents on the way to the finals. They finally hit a roadblock in the form of the Thomas Jefferson pair of Vincent Pham and Dante Pham.
Also playing for EHS at the league tourney was the doubles duo of Nick Harris and Hudson Kelsey. They won three of their five matches and are the No. 1 alternate to the district tournament.
A final EHS doubles entry, Tallon Warren and Asher Johnson, earned an opening-round bye and then won their second match. Two losses then put an end to their league tourney experience.
In 3A singles play, Enumclaw High was represented at the NPSL tournament by Levi Nelson and Eli Macy. Nelson advanced past the opening round by defeating an Auburn Mountainview opponent before being ousted. Macy received a first-round bye and was then eliminated by a Thomas Jefferson foe.
WHITE RIVER
The Buckley-based squad had the trio of Chase Hoalst, Ashton Chapin and Caleb Swensrud entered in singles play.
Hoalst opened with a victory over Todd Beamer’s Xander Lewis, Chapin began by defeating Kentlake’s Jack Dabling and Swensrud started with a victory over Alvin Pham of Federal Way. The Hornet trio then dropped their second-round matches and were eliminated from further tourney play.
On the 3A doubles side, White River’s Marcus Marlow and Alex Tessem won their first match, as did the WR pair of Warner Koehn and Beylian Diaz Santos. Both pairs dropped their second matches and were eliminated. The duo of Aiden Roberts and Dallin Marshall were ousted with a first-round loss.
