EHS swimmers defeat Lions, post district-qualifying times

In its opening meet of the season, the Enumclaw High boys swim team posted seven district-qualifying times. Competing Dec. 8 in their own pool, the Hornets defeated South Puget Sound League 3A foe Auburn Mountainview 119-66.

Right out of the blocks, two of the Hornets’ 200-yard medley relay teams earned at spot in February’s district meet. Thomas Petersen, Bennon VanHoof, Shane Jackson and Will Cooper raced to a first-place finish witha time of 1 minute, 49.26 seconds, while Travis Culp, Logan Ross, Braden Dedrick and Zack Petersen finished second in 1:56.93.

EHS’s 200 freestyle relay team of VanHoof, Ross, Kelly and Dedrick finished second with a district time of 1:44.50 and the 400 freestyle relay of Cooper, Thomas Petersen, Culp and Jackson also finished second with a district time of 3:55.47. The Hornets’ 400 freestyle relay crew of Sales, Kelly, Nick Stopsack and Zach Petersen finished third in 4:17.82.

In his first outing as a Hornet, Cooper won the 50 and 500 freestyle with district-qualifying times of 24.08 and 5:21.04 respectively.

Freshman Thomas Petersen won the 100 backstroke with a district-qualifying time of 1:01.97. Culp finished second with a district time of 1:04.73 and Zach Petersen finished the sweep for Enumclaw taking third in 1:09.11.

VanHoof raced to a 1:04.95, first-place, district-qualifying finish in the 100 breaststroke, just shy of a state time. Ross was second with a time of 1:15.33.

The Hornets also received impressive finishes from Gabe Sales, second, 200 freestyle; VanHoof, first, 200 individual medley; and Zach Petersen, first, 100 freestyle with a time of 56.96.

Diver Garrett Hall captured first place with 144.50 points. Teammate Benjamin Schimming was second with 135.10.
