EHS, WRHS basketball a force to be reckoned with in new league

Enumclaw girls basketball is the first to win three games straight in 3A NPSL.

It was a banner week for the four Plateau basketball teams – the boys and girls squads from Enumclaw High and White River – who went undefeated over the span of six days and seven games.

The Hornets from both sides of the river made an early-season statement: namely, that they are a force to be reckoned with in the 3A North Puget Sound League.

Take, for instance, the Enumclaw boys, who won three games last week, beating a pair of league foes (Decatur and Kentlake) before knocking off Capital High in a nonleague, Saturday night contest in Chuck Smith Gymnasium. New coach Sam Oliver proudly pointed out that the EHS program actually went 9-0 on the week, thanks to the varsity, junior varsity and C squads all sweeping their games.

The EHS girls played twice last week and registered two victories, easing past Decatur before swamping Kentlake. The wins made them the first 3A NPSL team to reach 3-0 in league play. Coach Danny Graham’s crew stood at a perfect 4-0 overall through games of last week.

Looking south to Pierce County, the White River won their only game of the week, slipping past Todd Beamer 72-71 Friday night in Buckley. The victory pushed coach Zach Johnson’s team to an overall mark of 4-0. The White River girls also were victorious in their lone game last week, crushing the Todd Beamer Titans 70-11. That moved Chris Gibson and his squad to 2-0 in league play and 2-1 overall.
