The annual holiday break provides two weeks of relative inaction on the prep sports scene, a respite before things heat up in January. Here’s a quick look at where things stand for the four Plateau basketball teams – that’s boys and girls squads from Enumclaw High and White River.
WHITE RIVER GIRLS
The perennially-powerful Hornet girls saw a little tournament action Dec. 29, heading north to participate in the Lynden Christmas Classic. The gathering is hosted annually by Lynden Christian High School.
Coach Chris Gibson’s crew kicked off the tourney with an afternoon game against Seattle Academy (results could not be included here).
The Hornets entered with a season record of 3-1 which included victories over Olympia High, Auburn Riverside and Thomas Jefferson, the latter two being North Puget Sound League 3A contests. The lone loss came at the hands of league foe Decatur, which leads the NPSL 3A pack with a 4-0 record.
The squad returns to league action next week with a pair of road games, traveling to Federal Way High on Jan. 5 and then crossing the bridge Jan. 9 for the first of two contests against rival Enumclaw.
WHITE RIVER BOYS
The Hornets return to hoop action next week with a pair of games, the highlight being the first installment of this season’s Battle of the Bridge series. White River will host rival Enumclaw High at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7.
Prior to that tussle the White River crew will host Federal Way the evening of Jan. 5. Both games are against North Puget Sound League 3A opponents.
The team played once during winter break, squaring off Dec. 26 against Hazen High. The nonleague game was contested at Highline Community College in Burien.
Before the break coach Zach Johnson and his squad had compiled a record of 3-3 that included NPSL 3A victories over Decatur and Thomas Jefferson along with a league loss to Auburn Mountainview.
ENUMCLAW GIRLS
First-year coach Julie Anderson and her Hornet girls will snap a two-week break Monday, Jan. 5, when they host Todd Beamer High in North Puget Sound League 3A action. That is followed by one of the season’s highlights: EHS will host rival White River High at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 9, in Chuck Smith Gymnasium.
The Hornet girls headed into break with a 2-0 mark in NPSL 3A play, posting victories over Thomas Jefferson and Auburn Mountainview. The team was playing .500 ball overall with a record of 4-4.
ENUMCLAW BOYS
During the pre-holiday portion of the Hornet season the EHS boys rolled to an impressive 5-2 record. That mark included victories over three NPSL 3A opponents (Thomas Jefferson, Kent-Meridian and Auburn Mountainview) and featured a five-game winning streak.
The EHS squad, under the direction of coach Sam Oliver, will be looking to keep the league victories adding up during the coming week. Most notable is a Battle of the Bridge clash against Plateau rival White River; the teams will meet Thursday, Jan. 8, in Buckley with a 7 p.m. tipoff. Earlier in the week, Enumclaw will travel to Todd Beamer for a Jan. 5 contest.
