It’s time for the Enumclaw High girls golf team to finish what it started in September – the quest for a second-straight state Class 3A title.

In October, Mara Koplitz won the South Puget Sound League/Western Cascade Conference girls golf tournament at Tacoma’s Chambers Bay Golf Course.

Koplitz, a senior, who finished sixth in the state in 2008, was one of three Hornets – junior Torey Schreiner and sophomore Kelly Sweeney are the other two – to make the cut to participate in the state tournament May 27 and 28 at Horn Rapids Golf Club in Richland, Wash.

Coach Bob Kilmer said things recently changed for the better for EHS when Kaylee Salsbury was handed a spot in the state tournament and Caitlin Runland was named to join teammate Janie Francis at the West Central/Southwest District tournament scheduled for Monday morning at Eagles Pride Golf Course, formerly Fort Lewis.

Salsbury, a junior, just missed the cutoff finishing ninth in the fall, but recently was added to the Hornets’ state roster.

Koplitz, who finished the day 12 strokes ahead of the competition, was named the SPSL Player of the Year. An honor she shared with Bonney Lake’s Alex Ellis. Schreiner finished the day in third place and Sweeney was not far behind in sixth on a links-style course that will make history when it hosts the 2015 U.S. Open.

Francis, a sophomore, finished 16th after a tiebreaker with four other golfers for that position.

If Francis and Runland, a junior, can join the others at the state tournament in May, it bodes well for the 2007 state runner-up and defending 2008 state champion Hornets to pick up a trophy at the state tournament.

On the Boys Side

Tyler Salsbury and Jordan Beals will lead Enumclaw High’s boys golf team into the state tournament after finishing second and third at the South Puget Sound League/Western Cascade Conference tournament at Chambers Bay Golf Course in October.

Salsbury, a freshman, and Beals, a junior, head to the state tournament May 27 and 28 on Meadow Springs Country Club in Richland, Wash.

Salsbury’s 1-under par 71 for 18 holes, was an EHS individual course record. Beals was named the SPSL Player of the Year, for the second straight year. Beals finished 11th at the 2008 state golf tournament.

Hornet teammate Jake Erickson, a junior, still has a shot at making the state tournament. He will get his chance at the West Central/Southwest District tournament at Eagles Pride Golf Course.

If Erickson makes the cut, the Hornets could be sitting in trophy-contention at the state tournament.

For both the girls and boys tournament, the top finishers will advance to state.
